How to Make Bibimbap


Bibimbap is a classic Korean dish that translates to "mixed rice." It is a delightful mix of rice, vegetables, protein (often beef or egg), and a flavorful gochujang sauce. Here’s how you can make it at home:

Ingredients (Serves 2-3)

For the Dish:

  • Cooked rice: 2 cups (preferably short-grain or medium-grain)
  • Vegetables:
    • Spinach: 1 cup
    • Carrots: 1 medium, julienned
    • Zucchini: 1 small, julienned
    • Mushrooms (shiitake or button): 1 cup, sliced
    • Bean sprouts: 1 cup
  • Protein (optional)
    • Beef: 200g (thinly sliced, marinated in soy sauce, sesame oil, sugar, and garlic)
    • Fried egg: 1 per serving
  • Sesame oil: 2-3 tbsp
  • Salt: to taste
For the Sauce:
  • Gochujang (Korean chili paste): 2 tbsp
  • Soy sauce: 1 tbsp
  • Sesame oil: 1 tsp
  • Sugar: 1 tsp
  • Garlic: 1 clove, minced
  • Rice vinegar: 1 tsp (optional)
  • Water: 1-2 tsp (to thin the sauce if needed)

For Garnish:
  • Toasted sesame seeds
  • Julienned nori (seaweed strips) or seaweed flakes

Instructions

1. Prepare the Rice:
  • Cook rice in a rice cooker or on the stovetop until fluffy. Keep warm.
2. Cook the Vegetables:
  • Blanch spinach in boiling water for 30 seconds, then rinse under cold water. Squeeze out excess water, and season lightly with salt and sesame oil.
  • Stir-fry carrots, zucchini, and mushrooms separately in sesame oil with a pinch of salt. Cook until tender-crisp.
  • Blanch bean sprouts briefly in boiling water, then season with a little salt and sesame oil.
3. Cook the Protein:
  • If using beef, stir-fry marinated slices in a hot pan until cooked through.
  • Alternatively, fry an egg sunny-side-up or to your liking.
4. Make the Sauce:
  • In a small bowl, mix gochujang, soy sauce, sesame oil, sugar, garlic, and rice vinegar. Adjust sweetness or heat to your taste.
5. Assemble the Bibimbap:
  • In a large bowl, add a portion of rice at the base.
  • Arrange the cooked vegetables and protein in neat sections on top of the rice.
  • Place the fried egg in the center.
6. Serve:
  • Drizzle the gochujang sauce over the top.
  • Sprinkle with sesame seeds and garnish with nori strips.
7. Mix and Enjoy:
  • Before eating, mix everything thoroughly to combine flavors. Adjust sauce quantity to taste.
