For the Kimbap:
  • Gim (seaweed sheets): 4–5 sheets
  • Cooked rice: 2–3 cups (preferably short-grain)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Rice

    1. Cook short-grain rice according to package instructions.
    2. Let it cool slightly, then mix with sesame oil, salt, and sesame seeds.

2. Prepare the Fillings
  • Julienne the vegetables and cook as needed (e.g., stir-fry carrots, blanch spinach).
  • Prepare protein options like crab, beef, or tofu.
  • Cut the cooked omelet into thin strips.
3. Assemble the Kimbap

    1. Lay a sheet of seaweed shiny-side down on a bamboo mat.
   2. Spread a thin layer of seasoned rice over the seaweed, leaving about 1 inch (2.5 cm) at the top edge for sealing.
    3. Place your fillings in a horizontal line about 2 inches from the bottom edge of the rice.

4. Roll the Kimbap

    1. Use the bamboo mat to carefully roll the seaweed over the fillings.
    2. Apply gentle pressure to form a tight roll.
    3. Seal the edge of the seaweed with a little water or rice.

5. Slice the Roll

    1. Lightly coat a knife with sesame oil to prevent sticking.
    2. Slice the roll into bite-sized pieces (about 1/2 inch thick).

6. Serve
  • Arrange the slices on a plate and serve with optional dipping sauces like soy sauce or spicy mayo

Tips

  • For vegetarian/vegan options, skip the meat and substitute tofu or mushrooms.
  • Experiment with fillings like avocado, kimchi, or sweet potato to customize your kimbap.
  • Keep your knife clean and oiled for neat slices.
