Potato gratin is a creamy, cheesy, and comforting dish that’s perfect as a side or main dish. Here's a simple recipe for classic Potato Gratin:
Ingredients:
2 lbs (1 kg) potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes work well)
2 cups heavy cream
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese (or cheddar/Parmesan as an alternative)
1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons unsalted butter (for greasing the dish)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional, for extra flavor)
Fresh thyme or chives (optional for garnish)
Instructions
1. Preheat the Oven:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
2. Prepare the Potatoes:
- Peel the potatoes.
- Use a sharp knife or mandoline slicer to slice them thinly (about 1/8 inch or 3 mm thick).
3. Make the Cream Mixture:
- In a saucepan, heat the heavy cream over medium heat.
- Stir in the minced garlic, salt, black pepper, and nutmeg (if using).
- Let the cream mixture warm up (don’t boil it), then remove from heat.
4. Layer the Potatoes:
- Butter a baking dish (about 9x13 inches).
- Arrange a layer of sliced potatoes evenly on the bottom of the dish.
- Pour a little of the cream mixture over the potatoes.
- Sprinkle a small handful of Gruyère cheese.
- Repeat these layers (potatoes, cream, cheese) until all ingredients are used.
- Finish with a layer of cream and top with Parmesan cheese.
5. Bake:
- Cover the dish loosely with foil and bake for 40 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-30 minutes or until the top is golden brown, bubbly, and the potatoes are tender.
6. Rest and Serve:
- Allow the gratin to rest for about 5-10 minutes before serving.
- Garnish with fresh thyme or chives for extra flavor and presentation.
Tips:
- Cheese: Use a mix of cheeses like Gruyère, cheddar, or Parmesan for a rich flavor.
- Cream Alternatives: You can use a mix of milk and cream to lighten it up.
- Additions: Try adding caramelized onions, cooked bacon, or thinly sliced leeks for variations.
Enjoy your creamy, cheesy potato gratin! It's perfect for a cozy dinner or as a holiday side dish. Let me know how it turns out! 🍽️
